GREAT START!

the project

The Community Table Food Bank Garden is an organic vegetable garden in the heart of Midtown Memphis. We grow organic vegetables that are all donated to local food pantries and soup kitchens. Our goal is to improve the quality of the food available for our most vulnerable neighbors. And now we want to add fruit to our growing list!

Our project seeks to add a few fruit trees and a row of blueberry bushes, along with some new native pollinator plants, like native honeysuckle vines, to the CT Garden, in an effort to further diversify our crops, to provide fruit to our clients, and to improve the garden environment for pollinators and wildlife.

the steps

1. Plan the Mini-Orchard

2. Research and order fruit trees and berry bushes, and pollinator plants

3. Purchase compost, amendments, fertilizers, equipment and tools for the project

4. Prepare the site (digging, soil amendments, fertilizers

5. Plant! (This will happen in stages)

6. Purchase and add companion plants around trees and bushes

why we're doing it

Our Community Food Bank Garden is a beautiful wildlife haven in the center of a bustling urban neighborhood that is also serving it's neighbors in a major way. We currently harvest and drop off produce weekly to our local food pantry, which serves hundreds of families. And the more healthy, safe food we can grow, the more people we can serve! We hope to add delicious fruits to our list of donations in the coming seasons.
