About the project
We hope to establish a radio station which can serve as a liaison between local residents and local government, that would both be an avenue for citizens to voice their concerns as well as a kind of public square where the community and city officials can meet. We are seeking volunteers to help get the station up and running, as well as contribute to programming and other operations. Hopefully, this will serve to increase community engagement with local government, and increase the efficacy of local government in best addressing the concerns of residents.
The Steps
Donations raised through ioby are to be allocated towards the purchase of equipment essential for operation. Further fundraising will be necessary to purchase the remaining equipment also needed for the radio station. Letters to potential donors have already been sent out, and we will continue to do so, for soliciting additional funding.
Why we‘re doing it
What we find is that many local residents are disengaged with the larger community primarily because of an information gap. On one hand, they lack information for how to best make use of programs provided by the local government, and on the other, may not have the encouragement or know the avenues by which they can best contribute back to the community. Our main goal, then, is to bridge this gap. We aim to identify what concerns local residents might have, and address them by providing them with resources, such as the availability of health clinics or initiatives launched by city council. While the station would be a means of voicing issues local residents deem important, it could also serve as a platform for city officials or community leaders to express their perspective on issues or elaborate on programs which the listenership might find of use.
