About the project
We are preparing to build a playground through a public-private partnership with the KaBOOM! Company. The "Community Playground” will be located between our Community Garden and our Community Center that is presently being renovated with the effort of volunteers. These projects are adjacent to our newly built Tampa Heights Greenway and Trails that were implemented by the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department.
The Steps
We have officially been selected for the construction of a community playground by KaBOOM! This means that KaBOOM! Partner PNC FOUNDATION FINANCIAL SERVICES GROUP has agreed to cover over 70% of the project costs. Our organization is only required to provide $8,500.00 toward the cost of the playground equipment. This contribution is due January 31, 2013 one month before the Build Day, which is scheduled for March 2, 2013. The festivities will take place from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm with about 300 residents, partners, employees and friends to help in the celebration and construction.
We as Community Partners have started to identify volunteers to help build the playground on Build Day. Parents and children who will use the playground are preparing to design and create the plan for this Community Playground. OnNovember 20, 2012 @ 4:00 pm, 30 neighborhood youth meet at The Tampa Heights Community Center and selected playground equipment and colors and art work. The parents and other adults from the neighborhood reviewed youth equipment selection and made final decisions that were sent to KaBoom!’s design center. We have ended up with 3 designs and are working with the children to identify the winning design that will be installed.
Why we‘re doing it
Central Florida Community Planning & Development organization focuses its efforts on grassroots organizations that believe in the utilization of volunteer efforts and support both people and organizations that are committed to making a significant difference in neighborhoods.
This project is to establish outdoor spaces where residents can interact with their neighbors. This public/private, non-profit collaborative effort will incorporate partnerships with the City of Tampa, (COT), Florida Department of Transportation, (FDOT), Tampa Heights Civic Association, (THCA), Tampa Heights Stewardship Implementation Team, (THST), and Tampa Heights Junior Civic Association. The Community Playground will be located in an area where the community has come together in order to revitalize a blighted area.
