About the project

The Allegheny Commons Community Garden has transformed an abandoned and dilapidated space into a useful and attractive plot. This area now provides accessible gardening opportunities to the socially and economically diverse Northside, North Shore and other City of Pittsburgh residents, businesses and organizational contributors, while returning a chronically underused parcel to an appealing and active use. What began as an idea in 2018, became a reality in 2019. Local residents worked diligently to transform an abandoned lot into a community asset.

In 2020, the garden committee aims to DOUBLE the raised bed capacity and continue renovating this space into a more attractive property.

The Steps

  • Double garden capacity through construction of 17 additional raised garden beds
  • Install attractive signage to increase community awareness of the garden
  • Continue improvements with the lot surface and surrounding fence
  • Improve the gathering space at the center of the garden

Why we‘re doing it

We are building the Allegheny Commons Community Garden to encourage new relationships and exchanges among people, support healthy lifestyles through gardening and develop a distinctive community asset.

Your contribution is valued and will help us to:

  • Continue restoring a derelict space to active use
  • Beautify and improve gateways to Allegheny Commons Park/Northside/Deutschtown
  • Improve relations between diverse communities/neighborhoods
  • Provide opportunities for business district engagement
  • Build partnerships with community organizations and establish educational opportunities
  • Promote stewardship and community involvement with local youth
