The Community Garden at Allegheny Commons -Building for the future!

After providing a safe and socially distanced space for neighbors to meet and garden through the COVID pandemic, the Community Garden at Allegheny Commons is ready to keep building as we move past this difficult time.

Location

300 Stockton Ave Pittsburgh, PA 15212

About the project

The Allegheny Commons Community Garden has transformed an abandoned and dilapidated space into a useful and attractive plot. This area now provides accessible gardening opportunities to the socially and economically diverse Northside, North Shore, and other City of Pittsburgh residents, businesses, and organizational contributors, while returning a chronically underused parcel to an appealing and active use. What began as an idea in 2018 became a reality in 2019. Residents worked diligently to transform an abandoned lot into a community asset.

Through the COVID-19 pandemic, the garden served as a place where community members could meet in a safe and socially distanced manner. This allowed neighbors to maintain and grow friendships and healthy and nutritious food during a challenging time.

The Steps

The Community Garden at Allegheny Commons wants to build on its past success and improve the space's accessibility, functionality, and attractiveness.

  • Increase garden capacity through new bed construction
  • Install attractive signage to increase community awareness of the garden
  • Continue improvements with the lot surface and surrounding fence
  • Excavate land and install water lines within the garden plot

Why we‘re doing it

We are building the Allegheny Commons Community Garden to encourage new relationships and exchanges among people, support healthy lifestyles through gardening and develop a distinctive community asset.

Your contribution is valued and will help us to:

  • Continue building upon a once derelict space that has become a community asset
  • Beautify and improve gateways to Allegheny Commons Park/Northside/Deutschtown
  • Improve relations between diverse communities/neighborhoods
  • Provide opportunities for business district engagement
  • Build partnerships with community organizations and establish educational opportunities
  • Promote stewardship and community involvement with local youth
