the project

Downtown Bridgeport radiates with diversity. Its many hues of humans, food, art, and business make it a place unlike any other. And yet, our Downtown is underutilized. Our Color It In public mural campaign was developed so that residents, workers, business owners, and local artists could take action and add to the vibrancy of our diverse Downtown. Through Color It In, we invite stakeholders to spread color and joy through public art, activations, and events with the goals of economic development, creating a distinct district identity, and improving quality of life for all members of our community.

After our initial success gathering community support to paint a ground mural along the centrally located Peacock Alley in Downtown Bridgeport, we are now seeking to fund a series of murals in pedestrian plazas that will create a pathway connected by visual art through different elements of the neighborhood. Each site will service and enhance the experience of residents, daytime workers, and visitors to the Downtown, while welcoming those individuals to explore different areas of the district. The selected installations will connect the recently completed Broad Street Steps with the ground mural at Peacock Alley, and then across our Main Street corridor. We believe the multi-functional spaces created will encourage lingering time in the district and at local businesses, while offering an amenity for Downtown residents and office workers.

the steps

  1. Convene a steering committee of local artists, community-based organizations, and residents to guide the creative vision of this project, which will catalyze a portfolio of public arts projects in the Downtown. (March 2020)
  2. Solicit general concepts for the activation of the identified sites from residents, workers, students, and other stakeholders. (March 2020)
  3. Issue a call for artists to submit their concepts for each or all of the identified locations. (Late April 2020)
  4. Select artists to design works for the identified sites. (May-June 2020)
  5. Present the artists' final designs at a community information session. (June 2020)
  6. Apply for and receive required permits and permission to install from governing municipal bodies. (June-July 2020)
  7. Gather volunteer commitments for installation (painting) at each of the sites. (June-July 2020)
  8. Host an "opening" celebration of the mural installation. (September 2020)

Downtown Bridgeport is home to over 2,000 residents, roughly 8,000 daytime workers, 5,000 students, and over 150 local businesses. We plan to engage those constituents through key outreach partnerships and direct communication through known and proven channels.

Each of the property owners of the privately-owned spaces have committed to the required maintenance of each site. Where needed, a stakeholder group will be formed to ensure maintenance of the site and its offerings.

why we're doing it

Color It In will spread color and joy throughout the neighborhood, in effect making it possible for Downtown Bridgeport to become known as a friendly, eclectic business and residential community flourishing at the intersection of commerce, community, and culture(s). The public art, placemaking, and activation of underutilized space resulting from the mural project will:

  • Improve quality of life for Downtown Bridgeport’s residents, workers, and visitors.
  • Establish Downtown Bridgeport as a desirable destination based upon its recognizable, distinct identity; and
  • Attract and retain new and growing businesses to our revitalizing neighborhood and vacant spaces.
