Thanks! Extending a Growing Season in Brooklyn.

the project

In just 3 growing seasons, a group of 60 people have worked together to transform a 19,000 square foot vacant lot on Fulton & Rockaway into the Phoenix Community Garden -- a bountiful urban farm and a colorful community garden. They are committed to engaging and involving young people. The Youth Tillers - a group of teenage urban agriculture interns at Green Guerillas - have become part of the life of the garden. We are seeking $75 for materials and supplies to help the Youth Tillers lead a workday to build cold frames to extend the growing season and increase a harvest that already adds up to more than a ton of fresh corn, beans, peppers, tomatoes and basil for Phoenix gardeners, community residents, and the Neighbors Together soup kitchen. (Activities will take place August 6th). GGs will provide a $75 match.

the steps

The Youth Tillers will design the cold frames, obtain materials, and lead a youth-powered workday with Phoenix gardeners to saw and hammer their way to more healthy fruits and vegetables for people!

why we're doing it

Ocean Hill/Brownsville is an area of Brooklyn that lacks open space, has few outlets for people to get fresh fruits and vegetables for their families, and needs more programs that engage youth in healthy activities that improve the environment and build community.
