Climate Friendly Gardeners
Help fund workshops for BLT and MLT gardeners to learn about global warming and steps they can take to reduce their carbon footprint in their own gardens.
About the project
We want to educate gardeners in the Bronx and Manhattan Land Trusts about global warming and what they can do in their own gardens to reduce their carbon foot print.
The Steps
We envision a series of 4 workshops to which gardeners are invited hosted by a MLT board member who participated in a global warming conference in Bolivia last year. One session will be about global warming - what it is, its impact on the world generally and NYC specifically. A second session will be on composting and cover crops hosted by a master composter. The third session will be on water - issues such as the problem of run off for our city and using soaker hoses as a best practice for irrigation. The last sessions would be on horticulture issues, such as vertical gardening. It will be run by experts, we have several on our boards. 3-4 Saturdays in late winter.
Why we‘re doing it
This is a opportunity for our gardeners to think globally and act locally; to learn about the issue of global warming and what they can do in their own gardens. We will discuss topics that include composting, clover crops, the least wasteful ways to water gardens, and growing practices that maximize produce production in small urban spaces.
