the project
"Chalk Park" is the result of the work completed by the Community Task Force for Family Activities, organized by the Downtown Las Cruces Partnership. Over a series of meetings and emails our task force identified an easily accomplished project they would like to undertake, a location, and potential community partners. Many parents who participated in the Task Force noted that there aren't many activities for families downtown. This is specifically true of free activities. Parents noted that their children of all ages like to draw with chalk and recommended an area for chalk drawings be created - so Chalk Park was born.
We intend to create a welcoming area with several black board "stations" with wooden frames where children and adults alike can create chalk masterpieces. Of course, the sidewalks will be available as well! The Task Force also felt the park should contain benches, shade and some landscaping. After the concept was solidified, we then identified a potential location of a callecita, or small alleyway, on the south block of Main Street to complement the free museum systems on the North Block and the Splash Pad in the Plaza on the Central Block.
By placing Chalk Park on the south end, families will be encouraged to walk the entirety of Main Street, passing retail shops and restaurants on the way, while engaging in activities throughout. This project will also activate an otherwise underused alleyway and transform it into a small but vibrant and colorful family destination.
the steps
1) Work with City of Las Cruces for project timeline and any constraints on use of public space
2) Work with volunteer architect to design project
3) Create list of needed materials and skills
4) Recruit in-kind donation of materials and skilled labor
5) Set time line for installation
6) Install
7) Have a ribbon-cutting and pizza party!
why we're doing it
The Downtown Las Cruces Partnership is committed to creating a unique sense of "place" in our downtown. We strive to implement projects that will draw community members to the district and create a fun and engaging environment for families to enjoy. This is one piece in a multi-pronged approach that will aid in the revitalization of the heart of our city, creating more economic activity, more community pride and more FUN downtown.
