the project

Co-founded by legendary musician, songwriter and organizer Si Kahn, former Alaska State Senator Suzanne Little and Bristol Bay commercial fisherman Dan Strickland, Musicians United To Protect Bristol Bay (over 350 members strong so far) is using the power of music and musicians’ networks to support the Alaskan Natives, fishermen and women in their fight to stop the Pebble Mine, and to raise awareness about the Pebble Mine/Bristol Bay issue around the world.  We have contributed to major recent victories, including the withdrawal of the leading principal investor from the mine project and the EPA’s recent decision to invoke the Clean Water Act to block the mine permitting.  But the fight is not yet won and our work continues.

Celebrate Si’s 70th with a birthday gift to Musicians United!

Si has asked that his friends mark the occasion of his 70th birthday with a contribution to Musicians United to Protect Bristol Bay, to help us continue our work to help stop the Pebble Mine and to protect Bristol Bay permanently.

Please honor Si’s 70th, his lifetime of work for just causes, and his role as Musicians United’s co-founder with a tax-deductible contribution today.

Thank you for being with us in this critical struggle.  We couldn’t do it without you.

Musicians United To Protect Bristol Bay

The Pebble Mine will destroy Bristol Bay, Alaska, home to 46% of the planet’s remaining wild sockeye salmon and to Alaska Native villages that have been on the same sites for over 50,000 years. We are harnessing the power of music and musicians to raise awareness about the epic battle to stop this mine from ever being built.

Do you enjoy salmon? Bristol Bay, Alaska, is the largest remaining sockeye salmon fishery left in the world. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it alone is responsible for approximately 46% of the average global abundance of wild sockeye salmon. Unbelievably, this pristine ecosystem is threatened with environmental destruction by a proposed “open pit” copper and gold mine. Please make a donation to help us run this campaign and then join and raise your voice.

the steps

Founded in 2011, Musicians United To Protect Bristol Bay, a volunteer organization, has run several successful campaigns as it continues to build its base membership of activist musicians.  We released a CD called Bristol Bay in July of 2012.  That month Bristol Bay hit #1 International Folk album and Si Kahn was the #1 international folk singer based on actual playlists from DJs around the world.

Our network responds in real-time to developments in the struggle, whether rallying thousands to submit comments to the EPA or using social media to thank elected officials who join the battle.

We just successfully sponsored Monica Zappa, a charismatic young dog sled musher who completed this year’s Iditarod under the banner “Mushing for Bristol Bay.”  She ran the entire race wearing the Musicians United logo; her dogs’ jackets had the “No Pebble Mine” symbol on them.  Monica brought information packets to villages along the way and garnered great media coverage for the cause.  We kicked off her race with a huge send-off concert in Anchorage, at which she was the guest of honor.

Our musicians have performed at dozens of concerts and we have a growing list of media coverage from radio stations and print media around the world.  We visit music conferences and festivals and recruit more musicians to the cause. Our members are writing original songs about Bristol Bay and the struggle to save it, which can all be heard on our website.

After you make a donation here, please visit www.MusiciansUnited.info and join us (both musicians and music lovers are welcome).  There you will find clear steps you can take to get involved and great music for a great cause.

why we're doing it

Musicians can participate not only with their creative spirit, but with the power of their networks. You are at this page because you belong to those networks.  We want you to know about this issue, spread the word and enjoy being part of a musical force that is harnessing our collective power to stand up to these insanely greedy corporations.

Music and musicians have the power to change the world, to stop the Pebble Mine, and to protect Bristol Bay forever.  But we can’t do it without you.  Please donate what you can today.
