Kickoff event a success!

the project

Equitable St. Louis seeks funds to expand community education about Community Benefits Agreements (CBAs). We are releasing a Baseline Guide to CBAs on May 30, 2018 that helps provide information and best practices for how to create a CBA. This kickoff event will feature spoken word artists, residents sharing their experiences of displacement and the need for CBAs, and highlights from our coalition members about the new guidebook. Then, we want to take this Guidebook on tour in neighborhoods throughout the St. Louis region. This series of community education events will inform and engage community members in the work of advocating for equitable and inclusive development through CBAs.

Funds will support community education events about the basics of Community Benefits Agreements. Equitable St Louis wants to do 10 education events in St. Louis neighborhoods.

the steps

1. On May 30, the CBA Guidebook is released at a kickoff event featuring spoken word artists and personal stories about the importance and need for community benefits agreements in St. Louis.

2. Then, we’ll take the Guidebook on tour! We want to speak at neighborhood meetings, community spaces, and other events in neighborhoods throughout St. Louis to increase education and engagement about CBAs.

3. In order to do this series of education events, we need the following:

  • Printed copies of the CBA Guidebook. We have a 12-page booklet to provide baseline information about CBAs and how to engage a CBA in your neighborhood. The guide includes lots of best practices and examples from other CBAs around the country.

  • Materials and supplies for the events, including things like chart paper, markers, pens, etc.

  • Outreach and marketing to spread the word about these events.

  • Space to host these events, which may include venue costs.

  • Refreshments! We want to get people to our events!

why we're doing it

Equitable St. Louis works to to empower residents to drive racially equitable development in the St. Louis region through the use of Community Benefits Agreements that are community-based, legally binding, and enforceable by the community. The coalition advocates for policy level implementation by providing education tools, data, and support to community members, neighborhood organizations, institutions, and local government.

We believe that St. Louis must address our regional inequities in order to grow. We will prioritize transparent, inclusive, and racially equitable development that invests in historically disenfranchised neighborhoods, particularly communities of color.

We value Community Benefits Agreements that include:

  • Community representation leading the negotiating process
  • Mutual benefits for the city, developer and the neighborhood
  • Legally binding agreements that are enforceable by the community
  • Racial Equity
  • Transparency
  • Equitable and Inclusive Development

We had a great turnout for the kickoff event last night! Over 50 people gathered to hear powerful stories from artists and community members about displacement and gentrification. Big thanks to everyone who helped make last night’s event a success! See pictures and updates on our Facebook page. You can download the CBA guidebook online.

Bigger thanks to everyone who helped us get over 50% of our fundraising goal IN ONE DAY! Your support means we can take the CBA guidebook on tour and reach more community members in St. Louis. Let’s keep the momentum going and help us reach our goal!
