For people with disabilities, chronically ill, immune-compromised, and elderly the coronavirus is making it harder than ever to receive the care we need. The LA Care Collective an organization based in LA but serves the greater US is raising funds and connecting volunteers and caregivers to make sure the most vulnerable in our community don't go without basic needs due to COVID-19 related emergencies. Did you know people with high-level spinal cord injuries have paralyzed lungs and the most common cause of death is already pneumonia? We want to serve those whose needs have always fallen through the cracks prioritizing, houseless, bipoc, undocumented folks, underinsured, and the uninsured in the process.
As we all grapple with the uncertainty and dangers of the COVID-19 pandemic, our city’s already vulnerable citizens face even more considerable barriers to get what we need to live.
Medical supplies that many disabled and chronically ill depend on daily to survive are extremely scarce, caregivers are getting sick or quitting, and the risk of exposure to a life-threatening disease is increasing for our community’s most vulnerable who without help will not survive exposure. We must ensure they have the resources, support, and care that they need to withstand this pandemic which threatens them most.
As we see mutual aid groups grow, these populations are falling through cracks more than ever.
Funds will be used to:
- Help provide supplementary care as people and their family lose their incomes.
- Help provide medication copays, and help cover medical care and treatment.
- Locate & provide necessary medical supplies and other resources.
- Help keep people housed in a world where accessible housing is nearly impossible to find.

why we're doing it
In a recent Time Magazine article by Abigail Abrams, we are reminded that “Roughly one in four adults in the U.S. has a disability, and an estimated 60% of Americans have at least one chronic health condition that could make the symptoms of COVID-19 more severe or deadly. Even in normal times, people with disabilities and chronic illnesses confront biases in medical care, face waiting lists to get support in their own homes instead of at nursing homes, and struggle to access government benefits.”

So now more than ever the disabled community are unable to access enough resources provided by other mutual aids groups because our needs are not covered within specific criteria, there’s a lack of knowledge surrounding the care we need and the costs are more exorbitant than just rent and groceries. The only other funds for this group have already been used up and had too low a maximum dispersal for the cost of caregiving for more than a day. For a person who needs a full time caregiver to get help into their mobility aid, bathed, fed, help with using the bathroom, and dressed, this care is life or death. And for many poor disabled folks they have already been homeless or their only option if they lose housing is group homes where many are dying and being infected by the virus.

Caregivers: 50% ($35K) of funds raised will go to supplemental caregiving
Healthcare: 20% ($14K) will go to emergency healthcare costs
Rent: 15% ($10.5K) of funds will go to emergency rent funds
Medications: 10% ($7K)will go to emergency medication costs
Medical Supplies: 5% ($3.5K) will go to emergency medical supply costs

@carecollectivela is taking requests for emergency aid for PWD facing crisis due to covid19. We are expanding this outside of LA, prioritizing disabled folks who are BIPOC, gender non conforming, intersectionally marginalized, and houseless. We’ve fundraised 6k through additional fundraising channels and can also help with navigating ssi, ihss, Medi-Cal, provide meal prep, and help solve any other problems you face living with disability.
