About the project
Every year for 22 years we have held a batizado, a festival of capoeira, where we host masters to teach guest workshops, and we have a graduation for our students. Normally, this is a big event with many community members both local and from around the country gathered together for all the live music, dance, martial arts, acrobatics, and sweaty fun that's involved in this art. But because of Covid, the last two years we have had very small, just local, one-day, outdoor events in the park. They were nice, and we are proud that we kept the tradition going. But now we feel it is safe again, plus several of our members are due to graduate, so this year we'd like to have a proper gathering and celebration.
We intend to bring around 20 master practitioner/teachers from around the US here to Sacramento, to spend five days with us teaching, performing, and inspiring. For people that want to participate in the capoeira workshops and circles, there is a sliding scale fee. For the public to watch, everything is free. Most of the action will be taking place at Move! Studio, on Folsom Blvd in Sacramento, and the schedule, registration, and other details are available at www.adbcapoeira.com.
Please join us in what will be the largest and most vibrant event of its kind in our region for years!

Why we‘re doing it
We believe that the arts, and capoeira especially, have a unique power to build community and improve people's lives. This event that we are hosting, the batizado, is so much more than a graduation for the students, or a performance for the public, or an educational experience. It is all those, but beyond that it is also an invaluable opportunity for living, breathing, oral-tradition arts to be transmitted from the older generation, in person, authentic, rich in culture and experience, to the young generation, thirsty after these dry years (the name of our group is Água de Beber, or "water to drink"). Also, by bringing together a diverse collection of individuals from many different locals, our event stitches the fabric of community, weaving connections across our area and the nation. This five-day festival will give Sacramento a one-of-a-kind experience of music, dance, martial arts, acrobatics, language, story-telling, and more. We do it for these reasons, but also, because we love capoeira!
