About the project
The CARES Initiative emerges from Michigan's dynamic cannabis regulatory environment, aiming to mend the deep divide fueled by stigma, misinformation, and a lack of open dialogue. Our mission is to foster a community rooted in understanding, respect, and informed decision-making. By emphasizing cannabis awareness, providing valuable resources, and delivering comprehensive education, CARES is dedicated to enlightening and empowering individuals across the spectrum of the cannabis conversation. We strive to dismantle barriers of misinformation and stigma through a multifaceted approach, including the development of evidence-based educational materials, facilitation of community forums for open dialogue, and creation of support networks for those affected by cannabis use, medically or recreationally. Our vision is a community where discussions about cannabis are driven by facts, not fear, ensuring every individual feels supported in their choices and experiences.
The Steps
- Developing Educational Materials: Crafting evidence-based content to clarify misconceptions and provide accurate information about cannabis use and its benefits, particularly in medical contexts.
- Facilitating Community Forums: Organizing forums for open dialogue, allowing community members to share experiences, ask questions, and learn from experts in a stigma-free environment.
- Creating Support Networks: Establishing networks for individuals and families affected by cannabis use, offering a platform for sharing, support, and advocacy.
- Operational and Financial Planning: Implementing a detailed budget and operational plan to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the initiative, with an initial focus on raising $153,000 for the first year to cover educational content development, community events, support networks, and operational costs.
Why we‘re doing it
The motivation behind the CARES Initiative is deeply personal and rooted in a transformative experience within my own family. My brother, who battled Sickle Cell disease from infancy, found profound relief in cannabis after years of suffering from frequent crisis episodes and the debilitating side effects of opioids. Cannabis not only alleviated his pain but significantly reduced the frequency of his crises, changing his life and our family's. His journey from constant hospital visits to leading a more stable life highlighted the potential of cannabis as a therapeutic agent, free from the stigma and misconceptions that often cloud its use. His passing has fueled my commitment to continue this movement, educating others about the benefits of cannabis and advocating for a society where such choices are informed, respected, and free from judgment. The CARES Initiative is more than just about cannabis; it's a tribute to my brother's legacy and a commitment to fostering a more inclusive, informed, and compassionate society.
