The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement in Girl Scouts and I am honored to have the opportunity to pursue it. The project I have chosen to complete for my Gold Award is to create sensory toolboxes for neuro-divergent children and those with sensory issues at Mason Elementary School. I believe that providing them with sensory toolboxes will help them cope with the challenges they face on a daily basis.
The sensory toolboxes will include a variety of items such as fidget toys, stress balls, etc. These items will help the children regulate their sensory input, allowing them to focus and participate in the classroom. In addition, I will be working closely with the school's gifted education department to ensure that the toolboxes are tailored to the specific needs of those children. With the money raised, I will be able to purchase the materials for the toolboxes and create them. I am excited to see the positive impact that these toolboxes will have on the children's lives, and I hope to continue to be involved in causes like these in the future.
Once we have properly fundraised the money that we need, the project is simple from there on out. We would go out and purchase the necessary items, assemble the toolboxes, and create a step-by-step guide for anyone that would want to replicate this project anywhere in the country. In addition, I will be hosting a workshop for 3rd graders on emotional regulation and coping strategies to supplement the toolboxes.
The younger generation was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in a way that most of us could have never expected. Being stuck at home all day for years didn't give them the typical experience that we grew up with, making their transition to "normal" school more difficult. A lack of community awareness about this issue reduced the likelihood for any solutions, which is where my project comes in. I hope that I am able to make a significant difference in these students lives -- and that you join me in this.
