My idea is to increase the use of Miami Metro mass transit through the use of "smart bus stops". Titled "B.U.S. Miami" [(Building United Spaces) in Miami] is an energy efficient, modular bus shelter. B.U.S. Miami combines necessities and packages them in today's environment. Miami is very hot with heavy rainfall. It's also a city that is very car dependent. One is often discouraged from using the public transit system because the majority of bus stops are uncovered. This initiative would decrease Miami’s car dependence as waiting for a bus is no longer taxing.
Step 1: Locate pilot locations for new bus stops
Step 2: Locate funding to buy materials for new bus stops
Step 3: Locate individuals to help build the new bus stops
Step 4: Design the new bus stops
Step 5: Build the new bus stops
Step 6: Track the usage of the new bus stops
Miami is a very car dependent city. It is also a very expensive city to live in. For a majority of people, the only means of transportation is public transit. Unfortunately for them many of the bus stops are unsuitable for pedestrians. Many of these locations do not have a seats or shelter which the Miami climate takes advantage of. South Florida can become very hot during summer months with humidity levels routinely above 100%, people deserve to be comfortable while waiting for the bus.
