the project

Your donations will ensure that Bullettrun's FREE parkour program is conducted every week at Wingate Park during the fall of 2020.

Bullettrun believes that the art and discipline of parkour is not just a form of self expression; it is a means to build self esteem and encourage young men and women to become leaders in communities lacking social, educational and economic resources.

Parkour positively impacts not just our company members, the majority of whom are young and black men, but the public who meets and works with them. Since 2016, Bullettrun’s WildRun program has presented parkour performances and classes in Kaiser, Lincoln Terrace and Wingate Parks. In the process, Bullettrun’s parkour classes and performances encourage new possibilities, and a dialogue of understanding between disadvantaged emerging adults and the community, where almost none had existed before. In the process, our efforts facilitate the creation of local sources of beauty and adventure.

the steps

Bullettrun's first day of our free parkour program begins on September 20, 2020

1) Parkour classes would be conducted on Thursdays at 2pm and Sundays at 10am at Wingate Park  (Note: Weather permiting. Make up alternate day would be Saturday at 10am).

2) Pay our parkour teachers every two weeks with money raised from IOBY

3) Post weekly videos and photos on our social media accounts that would document and promote our parkour classes conducted using funds raised by IOBY donars.

December 20, 2020 Parkour Programing Culminating Event:

4) Conduct a parkour performance showcasing student and teacher's parkour skills that would either be performed before a live audience (if a small, social distancing gathering was allowed) or would be documented and or streamed lived on our social media accounts as a culminating event.  This parkour program showcase would be held at Wingate Park.

why we're doing it

While the economic impact of the pandemic has made Bullettrun’s free parkour program more popular with students of all ages, it has created difficulties for our teachers. All our parkour trainers lost their jobs in April and are anxious about the additional $600 federal unemployment aid being discontinued.  According to a recent NY Times article, the unemployment rate in the neighborhoods where our parkour trainers live and work is as high as 30% (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/08/05/upshot/us-unemployment-maps-coronavirus.html). Additionally, these same neighborhoods have the highest infection and mortality rates from Covid-19 in the entire city (https://www.politico.com/states/new-york/city-hall/story/2020/05/18/poorest-nyc-neighborhoods-have-highest-death-rates-from-coronavirus-1284519).

Motivated by the considerable health and economic needs of our communities, Bullettrun wants to continue offering free parkour classes to students served at Wingate Park. Inspired by the overwhelming support and growth of our program this summer, our trainers want to continue this program into the fall and winter. Our trainers are especially motivated, despite and because of the same health and economic challenges they face in their community.
