the project

The Building of Central Woodward

A community space to serve, meet, engage and connect residents of  the Central Woodward and surrounding Detroit neighborhoods. It will provide services to each generation to include health (mental and physical), nutrition, literacy, workforce training, and youth engagement. The businesses will include a unique restaurant with catering and small store featuring items from local residents; a movement and trauma-informed nonprofit for youth, a youth multimedia program, a space for the newly formed youth council, literacy and academic programming for all ages, a beautification and climate resilience business for the community and community gatherings for discussions. The space will hosts events, social gatherings and community meet-ups. This space is for residents 0 to 100+ years of age.

Donations will activate projects within the Central Woodward community.

The Central Woodward Community Partnership in partnership with Detroit residents identify health, education (literacy, including financial literacy), and financial inequities and provide a space to obtain resources, services, and education, as well as cultural and social events.

We will initiate the project by clearing the lot of debris and overgrowth in the Spring of 2022, and installing a green infrastructure and permeable surface with native plants. Volunteers are needed.

the steps

  • Consult and Engage Design team from local college/university and pay stipend.
  • Clear and resurface of vacant lot
  • Purchase initial four (4) shipping containers or prefab structures of various sizes for businesses and programming.
  • Modify shipping containers (including windows, doors, insulation, electricity and plumbing) or install pre-fab structures.
  • Initiate landscaping, purchase and install plants, foliage, eco-friendly and permeable surfaces
  • Purchase signage.
  • Host grand opening for the community.

why we're doing it

Our goal is to engage residents to build a culturally, economically and environmentally-sustained community for residents in the Central Woodward and nearby communities. We will seek partnerships with individuals, groups and organizations that want to build or are focused on literacy, physical, mental and economic health, environmental sustainability and housing inadequacies, as well as provide opportunities for employment, training and community ciphers. All partners are focused on the health and well being of Detroit residents. It is our goal to host gatherings that are fun, educational and/or culturally enlightening while engaging and healing neighborhoods.
