Bicycle Coop Project is tailored towards supporting bicyclists in every way possible as it relates to bikes. We are looking to set up a safe, welcoming and well-equipped facility where bicyclists can utilize our tools to work on their bikes without having to break the bank. This way, many low-income bicyclists grumbling over the increasing costs of bike repairs will heave a sigh of relief. Plus, they will have access to our highly experienced and trained technicians.
We hope to embark on special bike programs during the biking season (June, July and October). The June and July edition will be tailored towards helping summer riders who are taking their bikes out of storage to fix or those who are just looking to hone their biking street skills. The October's edition will be centered around helping the fall and winter riders know how to store the bike for the next season.
This project is also geared towards reducing environmental pollution caused by cars. With many more people riding bicycles, there will be less car trips and by extension, less consumption of fossil fuels (which is a major cause of air pollution)
In the same vein, we are contributing our quota to reducing air pollution and ensuring a healthier environment through food waste reduction. A food scrap drop-off site has proven to be a far better alternative to a landfill that contributes significantly to environmental pollution. In our proposed food scrap drop-off site, organic wastes will be processed and converted into healthy natural fertilizers which will be utilized in local farms and gardens in the Bronx. This way, we will help reduce the toxins, leachate, greenhouse gasses, repugnant odors and seagull and rat infestations caused by landfills.
Support for Bicyclists: we hope to tackle to a good degree the challenges facing an average bicyclist in Harlem ranging from lack of technical know-how or access to essential bike tools to high cost of repair and maintenance.
Keen Advocacy for Bicyclists: addressing issues like sexism, financial discrepancies and underrepresentation constitutes a crucial part of our project
Empowerment for Bicyclists: we set out to make bicyclists more technically efficient and savvy at little or no cost. We hope to have at least 150 bike repairs and maintenance in a season.
Reduction of Environmental Degradation: a food scrap drop-off site will be a better substitute for a landfill that causes a lot of environmental hazards.
Provision of Healthy Natural Fertilizers: the processed food scraps will be useful in local gardens and farms.
