the project
Sounds of Brownsville is a youth led music collective and violence reduction initiative in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Sounds of Brownsville, is a project of the Brownsville Community Justice Center. The Justice Center works to reduce the negative impacts of the criminal justice system, increase youth opportunity, reduce community violence, and promote community resilience in Brownsville, Brooklyn.
Currently, SOB is developing a professional studio and industry incubator. The studio and incubator space will be completely youth led and operated. In addition to providing youth jobs, the studio space will be open to the community at large. The incubator will work with local artists to create and release their music while keeping control of the process in the community. The studio will provide access to Brownsville residents who have lacked this access in the past. The studio will serve as a hub for master classes, technical training, networking, and innovative arts and cultural productions.
the steps
Complete the studio build out
Hire and train youth to run production and administration of studio and incubator space
Develop program of master classes, trainings, and events
Plan and execute a studio launch and community celebration!
why we're doing it
The Sounds of Brownsville studio is an important investment in Brownsville youth and the community as a whole. Youth unemployment is 26% in Brownsville, the highest rate in Brooklyn. 8.5% of Brooklyn's prison admits come from Brownsville, although it makes up only 3.5% of the borough's population. 1 in 12 Brownsville youth are currently incarcerated. The high school graduation rate is 43% compared to 79% city-wide. These statistics point to some challenges we face as young people in Brownsville, but they don't tell the whole story. Brownsville youth are incredibly talented, creative, entrepreneurial, and driven. Sounds of Brownsville is committed to creating positive change in the community. We want to create this studio to provide space for the Brownsville community to come together, celebrate our talent, and develop the skills needed to accomplish our dreams. Brownsville deserves to have the same amenities, opportunities, and access that any other Brooklyn community has. This studio is one step in that direction.
