About the project
We're starting the Bronx's first worker-coop wellness center, dedicated to providing much-needed medical services to underserved communities in the borough.
Once open, the Center will provide acupuncture, massage, and herbal remedies to members of our community who struggle with diabetes, asthma, and other chronic illnesses. We will also partner with Fordham University to provide care for children in the Bronx.
The Steps
- We have already acquired the space that will eventually be occupied by the Bronx Wellness Center.
- We are currently raising money to participate in the Green Worker Cooperatives Academy this fall.
- We hope to take what we learn from the Academy and build our networks of potential patients and donors around the Bronx.
- Once we have built up our networks and recruited volunteers to help us run the storefront, we hope to open our space and begin serving the Bronx community.
Why we‘re doing it
We have seen firsthand the difficulties that people in our communities face in gaining access to adequate care and medication. Expensive co-pays, limited services, and limited insurance coverage have kept many Bronx residents from receiving the kind of care that would enable them to live long, healthy, and prosperous lives.
By providing holistic health services to people across the borough, we hope to empower our neighbors to live healthier lives. For example, we have seen firsthand the effects that the HIV/AIDS epidemic has had on our communities in the Bronx, and would like to be able to offer health education and nutritional counseling to our friends and family living with this disease. In doing so, we can teach members of our community how to sustain and build their immune systems naturally.
