the project

COVID-19 has reduced the aspiration and attainment opportunities in low-income and minority populations by displacing them from classroom settings, to largely online and remote learning environments. These students face diverse learning styles and disparities in education, and in some cases are first-generation college students without a legacy to follow. Many students from urban neighborhoods are in danger of failing before they start. WE WILL CONDUCT ALL SESSIONS AND WORKSHOPS 100% VIRTUALLY

Our first-time college students are at a deficit due to socio-economic barriers, lack of understanding the rigors of college, and the new found need to be disciplined and structured to not only exist, but to thrive. "Bringing Things Into Focus" alleviates stress on the students, families, and educators by preparing scholars for the next stage of their lives. Below are the first three workshops: (Each workshop, is three sessions long).

A.) What is College For? - In this session, scholars will understand the difference between their high school career, aspirations, and expectations of how college can assist them in meeting their life goals.

B.) Choosing A College - In this session, scholars will examine differences between In-State vs Out-of-State Colleges and how or if they align with the desired success.

C.) Language of College - Each scholar, will be provided a college freshmen level list of vocabulary words, so that they are better prepared for the uptick in the caliber of words and their uses.

the steps

The Project Leader, will begin the process of "Bringing Things Into Focus" by:

  • Developing the Right Staff
  • Building the Scope of The Project
  • Identifying Target Population
  • Recruiting
  • Executing Plan
  • Evaluation (Outcomes/Lessons Learned)

why we're doing it

Research has shown, that for decades too many students have embarked on systems of higher learning significantly under-prepared. Our young members are being told to "go to college," without understanding the lack of investment and under-preparedness. We are intentional about changing, not only the narrative but the lives of current and future scholars of our various communities.

COVID--19 has made college attainment for our underserved students more difficult. An already difficult process has been hampered by issues around access, process knowledge, and the lack of coaches to be available to assist students. The need to support kids is even more important than ever!
