the project

Our goal is to purchase sustainable items including mulch and other supplies needed to help complete the  ongoing beautification of Drew Park.  We would like to have our project completed for the community park event scheduled in October of this year.  Our mission is to enhance community relations by including sports and recreational activities, and to promote "Let's Talk Real Talk".  Included in our purchases will be office supplies, trophies, T-shirts and other items to allow our volunteers and BTP team players to promote a BTP presence and its work in Claremont Healthy Village community.

the steps

1) Keep all volunteers and NCO networking on bi-weekly bases

2) Evaluate the park for needed items and chart them

3) Plan and establish resources for upcoming early October event in the park

4) Purchase items needed for seasonal park change

5) Prepare for community event

why we're doing it

A 49 year resident of the Community, I have seen the many changes/challenges and interact personally with our community residents. We are in need of healing which we (the community members) must take responsibility and become part of the solution, Lessons learned as a CPHE 2.0 partner inspires me greatly to be active in positive change.

Our project mission is to help BTP to become a self sufficient entity and positively impact the social and spiritual health of the community residents and its visitors it will do this through hands on participation encouraging community residents and components to respect and enjoy the beauty of the park , through interacting in a vibrant space to play and relax as well as take ownership for Drew park through planting, cleaning, spruce ups and landscaping that uplift its decor and community spirit. We will use this project to continue our outreach work and ability to incorporate residents and workers in sports and recreation activities that inspire all ages of our volunteers to build capacity for our community's cultural change and  engagements to better relationships within our Community  , Bridging gaps Breaking Barriers to successful Sustainable Relationships in our community and helping to Heal its people.

Our story on ioby's blog!

bringing the peace and building community

“The way we perceive people is part of our mental health,” says Linda Kemp, leader of the Healthy Neighborhoods Challenge project  Bringing The Peace and Building Community. “In our community, we need to get to know each other, to build bonds, so that misconceptions are dispelled.”

Bringing the Peace continues the beautification and community-building work Linda started in Drew Park, a playground near her home in the Claremont neighborhood of the Bronx, a few years ago. This past July, she organized a Bring the Peace basketball game, where neighborhood youth and officers from the 42nd Precinct faced off on the court. The youngsters won 54-50 and were naturally elated, but Linda says for the rematch she planned for August, she decided to mix the teams up. “The coach was mad at first, but I had to tell him gently, ‘No. We’re bonding here. We’re breaking barriers so we can have a healthier community. We’re not against each other; we have to learn to work together.’ And you know what? The kids and the police played so well together.” Linda says the officers brought the young players a new basketball, some “old timers” from the neighborhood joined in the game, and she got some new recruits for her park beautification efforts in the process.
