About the project
Fellowship Chapel's Angel Tree Christmas Program reached out to Black and Brown Theatre after seeing the Fox 2 News story about our theatre for young audiences programming. They asked if we would be able to perform a play for their annual holiday party for all ages. We of course were ecstatic about the opportunity to perform for the children in this incredible program and we wanted to make sure we gave them the best performance possible: the best costumes, the best props, and of course, the best actors.
Now we need your help to raise the funds to make this performance possible. Many people are unaware of all the cost associated with a performance. With our company, we believe that artists need to be valued and compensated for their craft. Although our company often performs for free or reduced cost, we work to raise the funds to ensure that our artists do not have to work for free.
We also want to make sure we bring a high quality performance to these children who may not have access to live theatre. In addition to hiring the best actors, we also want to show up with elaborate costumes and props that not only give young people a magical, highly imaginative experience, but they also introduce young people to all of the other components of theatre. There are many people on the team that make a show magical and we want to make sure these wonderful young people have a memorable entrance into live theatre and we hope you will consider joining our team!
The Steps
December 4th: print scripts and make payment for rehearsal spaces
December 7th: purchase costumes and set pieces
December 14th: Performance date
December 16th: Compensate actors for their time
Why we‘re doing it
Many of our team members didn't discover the power of live theatre until we were adults. We have made it a mission to introduce live theatre to young people who also haven't had the opportunities to access it because we believe in its power to develop empathetic and creative young people who bring new ideas and understanding to anything they end up pursuing. We also believe theatre has the power to enrich language and literacy skills which develop more effective communicators. Lastly, we have seen how it brings smiles to faces of young people across Southeast Michigan. As much as we value all of the skills theatre teaches, we most value the way it can make young people escape into a world of pure happiness and sometimes, children need permission to be children and experience true uninhibited joy which we have evidence our plays do just that.
