the project

Our interdisciplinary and urbanist collective, BlackSpace, has been energized to develop and implement work and ideas that can have a meaningful and tangible impact on our communities and multiple fields of practice. Our work intersects multiple themes that align with community development, heritage and environmental conservation, social justice, civic engagement and leadership, and working to support and improve Black communities, places, and spaces in NYC and nationally. This campaign will provide the funds needed for administrative and operational support for the organization including online and in-person support of BlackSpace members and for activities in the communities we serve.

the steps

Our volunteer-led initiative has grown with a number of successful projects and convenings and is in need of more resources to take our work to the next level. This campaign will help kick-start a much larger fundraising effort and will help provide the resources needed to support BlackSpace's formal organization and operation for 2019. Strengthening our operational infrastructure is necessary to support the growth of our community of Black urbanists and the health and sustainability of the collective to serve our communities. BlackSpace's membership has grown four-fold in one year; we are now serving over 100 Black urbanists in New York City, in addition to two chapters in Chicago and Oklahoma. The funds will be used to strengthen and activate our member network and chapters, grow and manage our online and social media reach, and support continued working group projects and programs in 2019.

why we're doing it

Our interests are also rooted in connecting the social, environmental, and cultural causes that can together support better conditions and outcomes in the present and future for our communities—and including Black neighborhoods experiencing significant challenges and change.
