About the project
Throughout the 2014-2015 school year, Bike Easy is working with 10 schools to teach 4th and 5th graders about bicycle and pedestrian safety. We are also hosting six "Youth Bike Rodeos" to provide bicycle education in a fun setting. The workshops and rodeos give kids the skills they need to ride their bikes safely through a fun and playful series of activities. We set up a series of exercises for them to practice motor skills; learn about intersections; model signaling on their bikes; and play games such as the snail race and rock dodge.
In order to do this work, we need to have a fleet of bikes for kids to use during the rodeos! A bike fleet will enable us to significantly expand our educational programs and reach a much larger number of kids - our goal is to reach over 2,000 young people in the 2014-15 school year!
The Steps
Once we have purchased the full fleet of 15 bikes and 30 helmets we will schedule workshops at the 10 local schools throughout the rest of the 2014-2015 school year. Owning the bikes will allow us the freedom to continue the workshops during the summer and at other events and fairs to reach even more kids throughout New Orleans.
Why we‘re doing it
For many kids, a bicycle is their first vehicle, and this education will be their first introduction to the rules of the road. The skills we teach them will be critical for them to bike safely in the neighborhoods, with their families, and ride as part of Bike and Walk to School Days hosted by their schools.
