About the project
Recycle-A-Bicycle's most unexpectedly popular program in the Greening Western Queens area is Bike Jewelry making! Surprise! Our students and folks at public events really LOVE cycle craft. We use old bike parts that can no longer be recycled into bicycles and get creative with bike jewelry. We will never run out of bike parts, but we have run out of wire, fishing line, jewelry fasteners, circle links, hooks and straight pins. Throw a few dollars in to help our students out and we'll see you at the Recycle-A-Bicycle benefit on December 3rd with our 2012 line of bike jewelry for sale, or "bike couture" as we like to say.
The Steps
1. Raise money on ioby to buy jewelry fasteners and other parts that hold jewelry together.
2. Coordinate ongoing student workshops educating students on environmental principles, landfill waste, creating business plans, and bike mechanics.
3. Deconstruct old bikes and shine up a lot of dirty bike parts.
4. Make jewelry. Be creative!
5. Create displays and sell jewelry.
Why we‘re doing it
Recycle-A-Bicycle is a non-profit community bike shop. We are dedicated to the health and development of NYC youth. Every dollar we raise supports Recycle-A-Bicycle youth programs including Earn-A-Bike, Kids Ride Club, Youth Ambassadors, and Bike Bonanzas. With your help, more than 1,000 RAB youth collectively refurbished 500 bicycles, pedaled 24,000 miles, and burned 1,500,000 calories in the past year alone.
