the project

PS 316 Elijah G Stroud Elementary School is a diverse school in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Our school population represents a wide range of cultures, languages, and countries of origin. We are an International Baccalaureate candidate school and have been recognized by New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina for our extensive arts program.

With your help, parents and teachers will create a mural that reflects our school’s diverse community and celebrates our school's focus on the arts. This mural will cover the entire first floor of the walls adjacent to the main entrance.  This gated space abuts our lower school playground and is used in many events. We aim to create an "open-air museum" to be enjoyed by both the students and the greater community.

The mural has been designed by parents who work in the arts and have generously volunteered their time and expertise. The proposed design uses the universal language of geometric shapes and basic colors. Each panel in the wall will be painted a different pattern using the simple designs of flags and global folk art. The design will be flexible and incorporate obstacles such as windows and doors. It can easily be extended to include more walls or upper floors at a later date. The mural will be painted by volunteer parents and staff, following a simple "paint-by-number" approach so that volunteers will not need prior artistic experience in order to help create the mural.

We look forward to welcoming the community into our open-air museum.

the steps

In the past few months, two parents who work as artists have worked with Principal Maluf and her staff and members of the PTA to design the mural. As they finish their sketches, the PTA is working to secure funds to purchase the needed paint, brushes, and other supplies.

Our next steps are:

1. The custodians have scraped off loose paint and primed the walls to be painted.

2. We will choose painting days and reach out to parents to secure volunteers for those days.

3. We will paint the mural over several days in late May and early June.

why we're doing it

The parents and staff of PS 316 are dedicated to the arts, both visual and musical, and we want to express this appreciation of this vital part of our children's primary education through a community-based art project. We hope this mural will be an enduring symbol of our school's conviction that all students deserve excellence in education, and excellence in education requires the arts.

updates

We've reached our goal! Thank you

Thank you to all our parents and friends! We have successfully reached the goal we set to fully fund the mural. But we are happily continuing to take on more funds to set aside for new art projects. Already we have decided to paint the outside fence, extend murals to the sides of the school and perhaps the gym and auditorium. All money we raise will be set aside for future projects.

We have tentatively set the schedule for painting and will be sending out new emails asking for volunteers. We look forward to painting with you all soon!
