the project

For more than 35 years, the Baldwin Center (a 501c3 nonprofit, baldwincenter.org) has been caring for people in and around Pontiac, Michigan. The pandemic has challenged our way of doing things. In the past, we’d be feeding, clothing, educating, and empowering our neighbors with the help of around 2500 volunteers, contributing around 15,000 hours a year. Now, because many of those volunteers are at high risk for COVID-19, we’ve got to find new ways.

We’re hoping the online community will help us raise $5000 towards additional staff from January-March. We are collecting donations until December 31st. Any funds raised beyond our January-March staffing needs will provide for building essentials like electric and gas bills, building upgrades, and keeping our services running.

the steps

  • Right now, we continue to feed, clothe, educate and empower, paying attention to the shifting needs of our community.
  • After funds are raised, we will begin the hiring process based on those needs.
  • After hiring, we will apply remaining funds toward things like facilities upgrades, the gas/electric bill, and keeping our services running.

why we're doing it

The Baldwin Center is deeply invested in the community we serve. Allowing the challenges of the pandemic to stop us would go against who we are. Our vision is a thriving community with engaged citizens. Our promise is to provide the tools necessary for individuals and families in need to become vibrant, productive community members. We value honesty, respect, integrity and compassion. We believe in the strength of human dignity and the resilience of the human spirit as we continue to feed, clothe, educate and empower!

updates

December 15

We cannot express our gratitude enough to our early donors. We hope to continue to connect with you and build our community.

Right now at the Baldwin Center we're preparing Holiday Food Boxes for folks in our community who could use a hand. At the same time, we continue regular meal service, although it looks a little different these days. Before COVID, those eating lunch with us would come into our dining room and be served a plated meal. Now, our dining room holds donations to be sorted and delivered. Our parking lot is transformed into a drive thru three times a week.

We've been able to find new ways to serve thanks to the resiliency of our staff and volunteers, as well as the generosity of our donors.

Thanks again--and feel free to share this opportunity with anyone who might be looking to lend a hand in Pontiac!
