the project

Every Summer in the City camper's T-shirt says "Future Volunteer." And they know we're serious about it. We know it's a long time between summers. Backpacktacular is a humble way of helping them carry the curiosity and creativity they cultivated with us back to school with them. To keep their shoulders up, even when they're feeling the weight. To learn to read and read to learn. To know that we're rooting for them -- and that we expect nothing less than the best from our Future Volunteers.

the steps

1. Getting our Volunteers and Campers excited for the big finish of Summer #18 on August 16.

2. Savvy sourcing of donated and discounted school supplies.

3. Raising money from our benevloent and big-hearted friends and family for our beautiful back-to-school backpacks.

4. Celebrating the end of Summer on the most fantastic day of all: Finale Friday! Campers will get to do their own back-to-school shopping to fill their boutiful backbacks at activity stations throughout Doan Playground.

why we're doing it

We work to create safe spaces for Campers and Volunteers to grow together for 8 wonderful weeks. And then we share in their anticipation and anxiety about heading back to school.

A u-pack backpack after an action-packed Summer is an admittedly modest investment, but when know it pays dividends from the Play Program alumni who have returned as Volunteers and Crew.
