60 days into our project!

the project

Astoria Mutual Aid Network is a group of neighbors working together to support their community and each other during the COVID-19 crisis. The Network is 100% volunteer-run and provides non-emergency assistance, free of charge, to community members who are especially vulnerable during this time. Volunteers are ready to help with everything from buying groceries and picking up medical prescriptions to coordinating transportation for medical appointments or checking in on isolated community members with some friendly conversation.

The Astoria Mutual Aid Network is non-political and non-partisan, made up of community members who believe that we are stronger when we take care of each other. With New York State gearing up for an extended period of social distancing, and with many of our neighbors out of work, The Astoria Mutual Aid Network has built infrastructure to support their neighbors over the long haul.

In addition to providing support and assistance to neighbors, the Astoria Mutual Aid Network has expanded to help support local businesses, advocate for supportive practices within the community, and disseminate accurate local information through its social media channels.

Every donation you give us is fully tax-deductible to you!

the steps

These funds will help us:

  • Feed neighbors experiencing food insecurity;
  • Provide sanitation and basic needs supplies;
  • Support families who need basic baby items; and
  • Expand our reach of communications and operational capacity.

If any funds remain after the need has passed, they will be donated to nonprofit organizations serving the most vulnerable populations in Western Queens.

why we're doing it

We believe that neighbors have a duty to take care of one another, and that this tight knit fabric is what makes Astoria the best place to live in New York City.

To better serve our most vulnerable neighbors, we are linking up with initiatives that are feeding people, keeping people safe, and giving people the resources they need to make it through this pandemic safely. We are doing our part, but we are not the only ones doing the work.

As of April 29, 2020 the Astoria Mutual Aid Network has:

  • registered over 730 volunteers, 35 of which are trained Dispatchers working 7 days a week to intake neighbor needs;
  • processed over 1,500 calls, emails and text messages from members of the community; and
  • resolved over 430 needs for more than 375 neighbors.

And we're just getting started!

We're hoping to raise money to keep our neighbors safe and fed. The funds raised here will be redistributed among community efforts that are delivering fresh and nutritious food to folx, ensuring neighbors have basic sanitation supplies and delivering family care items (i.e. diapers and wipes) to neighbors in need. Based on the requests we receive, the AMAN community will collaborate to determine the best way to distribute funds with the majority of them going to local food relief efforts that are providing immediate relief to individuals experiencing food insecurity as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

60 days into our project!

Hi Friends,

I wanted to reach out with a personal thank you for your generous donation to the Astoria Mutual Aid Network. When Ross and I put up our first flyers we never imagined what this community would look like two months later. Since we first put out our call for "Neighbors get help. Neighbors give help." we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of graciousness of our community. Since March 14, we have:

  • posted over 3,500 flyers in 10 languages across Astoria;
  • engaged over 830 volunteers to support our work;
  • completed over 682 errands;
  • provided direct assistance to 495 neighbors across W. Queens; and
  • responded to over 1,650 calls, emails and text messages.

Now with the support of your donation, we can do even more. Your dollars will help ensure we can feed Maria and her family healthy and nourishing food while their entire household recovers from COVID-19 at home. Your contribution will make sure we can continue to give Corey a ride to her weekly chemotherapy appointments so that she doesn't have to worry about risking her health while she's combating breast cancer. Your generosity will allow us to continue to support the persistent efforts of local organizations like Hour Children Food Pantry and Lifeline Groceries. Your gifts make all the difference in our ability to meet the needs of our neighbors with dignity and grace. Thank you for giving us that gift.

And so, though it may not be much, a gift form our family to yours - Emma, age 7, wanted to say thank you in her own way too (see attached picture).

We'll continue to do our part as long as we can, and as long as our community needs us. Please follow our work via Facebook and Instagram. And of course, if you or a loved one is in need of assistance in/around Astoria, please don't hesitate to reach out by email ( or phone (646-397-8383).

Be safe. Be well. Be good to each other.
