About the project

As part of the Allied Media Conference, an annual media justice conference in Detroit, we are coordinating a series of workshops under the theme - Art as Resistance. We have accepted proposals from artists, organizers and grassroots groups from around the country that use visual and performance art to disrupt, inform, affirm and catalyze social change in their communities.

The goal of the workshops are to bring together folks from around the country to exchange ideas, skills, and lessons learned to develop new strategies and inspiration for creative resistance. The track also serves as a forum to uplift the art in Detroit's resistance to water shut-offs, foreclosure, environmental injustice and gentrification.

10 different workshops have been accepted into the Art as Resistance Track. Part of our job as coordinators is to support presenters' needs which may include presentation materials, printing, transportation costs, etc.

The Allied Media Conference will match our fundraising amount up to $1,000.

The Steps

The call for proposals has ended and the final selection has been made.

The goal for May is to push fundraising. We are hosting an art exhibit May 6th to kick off our fundraising process: The Red and Black Art Show Saturday, May 6th  7-11pm at the Trumbullplex. https://www.facebook.com/events/1919859201632689/

We will be printing stickers and patches to sell and promoting our ioby page.

The (Allied Media Conference) takes place June 16-18th on the campus of Wayne State University. https://www.alliedmedia.org/amc

Why we‘re doing it

The goal of the workshops are to bring together folks from around the country to exchange ideas, skills, and lessons learned to develop new strategies and inspiration for creative resistance: water shut-offs, foreclosure, environmental injustice and gentrification.

So to sum it up - idea sharing, strategy development, national network building amongst artists / organizers, and to uplift the story of Detroit's creative resistance on a national platform.
