the project

In 2017, the Youth Bike Summit will be held in Arlington, VA, around 300 miles from NYC. A group of high school students and teachers plan to cover that distance on the bicycle, stopping along the way to learn and absorb the storied significance of historic towns. At the Youth Bike Summit, each student engages a diverse community of bicycle enthusiasts exercising their unique set of skills to both teach and learn from others like them.

The Bike School follows the CTE learning model through a bicycle-focused curriculum. As our mission statement explains:

The Bike School dedicates itself to the pursuit of knowledge through experiential learning, critical thinking, and technologically relevant programs that challenge and encourage students to lead enlightened, productive, and civically engaged lives. The bicycle's universal appeal attracts and encourages a heterogeneous group of learners to create diverse, equitable, healthy, and sustainable communities. Bike School inspires learning in a holistic manner by connecting students to the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of their journey through life, and nurtures inquisitive, self-reliant, and confident minds.

Career Technical Education (CTE) provides students of all ages with the academic and technical skills, knowledge and training necessary to succeed in future careers and to become lifelong learners. By introducing students to workplace competencies in preparation for the world of work, students engage with academic content in a hands-on context. The Arlington Adventure validates the Bike School's pursuit of experiential learning to the Department of Education.
