the project

A survivor of various forms of abuse and tragedies; I often say that by my grandmother raising me, she rescued me. I unexpectedly lost her 6/5/2019. This has taken me through a journey and process that I'm still navigating through. My #1 supporter, protector, and confidante is now my #1 guardian angel and muse. Not only was my Granny a big advocate for education, but specifically books and reading…feeding the brain positively.

She was an avid reader with a plethora of books and raised me to be the exact same. Enduring grief and a period of evolution or rebirth, has been positively affected by how i've chosen to pay homage to her. I am very proud and excited to announce the first of a few things my brand is doing to honor her. A book scholarship in her name. It is specifically for students wanting to further their education at any Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

the steps

The $2,000 for the Spring semester would be given out the beginning of January '23 (at the latest). The applicants will submit an application, which includes an essay and the winners will be chosen by a committee. The committee has already been chosen.

why we're doing it

While digital or e-books offer convenience, they ensure that every student will pay full price, every time. Students can no longer save money by sharing, buying used hard copies or renting their textbooks. Today, with the pivot to online learning, students almost always have to buy access codes for temporary access to LMS-integrated course materials, assignments, and other critical resources needed to complete an online class. Schools with “inclusive access” have made it mandatory. And while publishers selling e-books and online course materials to students do not have to pay the costs of printing, binding, and shipping textbooks, the prices continue to stay the same or increase.

Tru Phoenix Foundation, Inc. is dedicated to Enriching The Youth One Child At A Time.  One of the focal points is to provide minority youth with an outlet and a muse; along with enhancing their sense of direction and strong support system, which will aid them in achieving a future that is sufficient to their full needs and potential. This scholarship will aid students by easing some of the financial burdens that comes with pursuing an education. one of the main reasons individuals do not pursue their education is due to financial hurdles. With the cost of books being what they are, this scholarship will lighten that load.
