the project
The Allegheny Commons Community Garden will transform an abandoned and dilapidated space into a useful and attractive plot. This area will provide accessible gardening opportunities to socially and economically diverse Northside, North Shore and other City of Pittsburgh residents, businesses and organizational contributors, while returning a chronically underused parcel to an appealing and active use.
the steps
- Adapt, re-use, and improve abandoned and deteriorating tennis courts
- Build 24” to 30” high durable raised gardening beds on top of existing asphalt to promote use by gardeners with varied abilities and mobility
- Engage gardeners, volunteers and governance members from the diverse surrounding communities
- Strengthen community relationships across physical & social barriers
- Promote the health and well-being of participants
- Encourage reciprocal economic connections with nearby businesses
- Improve the gateway to Allegheny Commons Park, Deutschtown and the Northside
- Discourage criminal and nuisance activities by reactivating an area in current decline
- Provide space to host appropriate social, educational and cultural events
