About the project

In spite of the COVID crisis, our adult learners are persevering and succeeding in their educational goals.

Our Program:

  • Prepares adult learners for the GED examination through online and face2face classes taught exclusively in Spanish by bilingual speakers--the only program with this model in the region.
  • Builds facility with English through English as a Second Language (ESL) courses.
  • Facilitates participation by providing childcare while class is in session.

THE PROJECT

Further supporting this mission, we offer additional programs to any member of the community.

  • Overcome gaps in distance education with after-school tutoring (grades 1-8).
  • Outreach services help our vulnerable community stay healthy, including workshops on COVID prevention at home and work, basic dental hygiene, immigration issues, domestic violence prevention, work safety and personal finance.
  • To serve our community by providing basic necessities (food, housing security, electricity, water, heat), mental and health services and resources to help those struggling during this crisis.

The Steps

We plan to:

  1. Build workforce readiness and partnerships so that students can enter the pipeline for year-round, higher-wage employment, continue with vocational training or college.
  2. Offer more scholarships for obtaining essential technology (internet access, computers and their educational applications) to access educational resources for low-income adult learners and their children.
  3. Develop computer and financial literacy and technical and entrepreneurial skills so that adult learners can become self-sufficient and inspire the next generation.

Why we‘re doing it

We need financial support to assist our adult learners during this COVID crisis.  They are persevering and succeeding in their educational goals, in spite all challenges, overcoming simultaneous obstacles such as loss of income, stress from juggling home duties with online schooling children, and avoiding illness. The success of our program depends on our teachers’ and students’ ability to avoid illness and continue attending class.  Success is exciting and important for the community but our small budget is being stretched as we struggle with the impact of this pandemic.  Since we are funded by grants and donations, we need your help. Students in our program come with a ready supply of grit, self-reliance, entrepreneurial talent and a strong sense of community.  Often what stands between them and integration into the workforce and meaningful employment, is a high-school diploma and facility with English.
