There is unused public land along West 180th Street. This street borders Bronx Community College and on one side of the street are private houses. On the other side is a stone wall - the college. Between the stone wall and the side walk is 6 feet of unused land. The wall extends for 4 blocks - all of which is unused and full of weeds. Unfortunately, some of the local residents consider this area to be a dumping ground for trash. This is also where they walk their dogs.
My neighbors and I feel that this land could be put to better use as a community garden. This would allow apartment dwellers to have their own piece of land. It would also bring community pride to the neighborhood, bring natural beauty, honey bees and butterfies to our block. It would allow neighbor children to see where natural food comes from and how easy it is to grow.
There are several hurdles to jump over - what paperwork is needed, access to water, a place to store supplies, finances to purchase supplies, etc. But I know this is a great first step - finding help from someone who's been through this and knows what to do and who to contact to make our lives easier.
Thank you in advance for your help and hopefully, by next year West 180th Street will be the pride of the South Bronx.
Complete necessary paperwork, contact BBG.org for plants and assistance, ask BCC for help (water source). Unsure of time needed.
To beautify the neighborhood, to make the neighborhood into a community, and to instill community pride in our neighborhood.
