17 Trees, To Be Precise (PART ONE)

A children's book about street tree stewardship, inspired by a true NYC event. The book offers a starting point to speak with kids about the value of community engagement - starting with YOU!

About the project

Please contribute towards the production of this children’s book (0-6yrs) about the value of community activism.

Drawing on the true experience of the Proyecto de Embellecimiento 137th Street Beautification Project which celebrated its 10th Anniversary in 2020, the book aims to inspire the newest generation of engaged citizens.

The picture book offers a lively and interactive way to talk with young children about community involvement and how ANYBODY can be the spark in their neighborhood. A generous grant from Partnerships for Parks kicked off production on the first phase of the book project in 2021 which resulted in the exciting illustrations you see above by NYC artist Juliette Borda!

This campaign funds Part One, ie. roughly the first half, of the illustrations. Please see budget tab for more detailed breakdown.

The Steps

June-August 2021: Fundraise

Sept 2021-Feb 2022: Develop illustrations of Part One.

Why we‘re doing it

Neighborhood action can start with YOU!!! It’s as simple as that.

Engaged citizens are the underpinning of a healthy democracy and offer a counterpoint in an era of increasing globalization, corporate takeover, worker disenfranchisement and ecological degradation. Starting local is a great way to begin, whether it’s in your building, on your block or in your city.

This book provides caregivers and their children a starting point for conversations about the value of good citizenship.
