17 Trees, To Be Precise (PART 2)

A children's book about street tree stewardship, inspired by a true NYC event. The book offers a starting point to speak with kids about the value of community engagement - beginning with YOU!

About the project

Join the team creating a crowd-funded children’s book (for ages 3-7yrs) about the value of community activism! Engaged citizenship strengthens communities and builds trust and resilience, grounding attributes in turbulent political and ecological times.

This children's book offers a starting point to talk with kids about community involvement and how ANYBODY can be the spark in their neighborhood. It also outlines the benefits trees provide, and offers tips on how to get started organizing in your own neighborhood.  A generous grant from Partnerships for Parks kicked off production in 2021, resulting in the first exciting illustrations by NYC artist Juliette Borda. We'll be dropping those here in the coming weeks.

Drawing on the true experience of the Proyecto de Embellecimiento 137th Street Beautification Project, which celebrated its 10th Anniversary in 2020, 17 Trees, To Be Precise aims to inspire the newest generation of engaged citizens.

This second campaign will fund the remaining illustrations and the printing of 1,000 books to be distributed for free to community leaders. Please see budget tab for a more detailed breakdown.

The Steps

March-May, 2022: Fundraise for the remaining illustrations.

June-September 2022: Finalize illustrations and graphic design, and submit for printing.

October-December, 2022: Distribute finished children's book for free at community volunteer events, via Community Boards, Councilmember Offices, and Borough President Offices.

Why we‘re doing it

Neighborhood action can start with YOU!!! It’s as simple as that. This book provides caregivers and their children a starting point for conversations about the value of civic engagement, the benefits of trees, and guidance on how to implement Your Big Idea.

Engaged citizens are the underpinning of a healthy democracy and offer a ballast in turbulent times. Engaging in your local community is a great way to begin practicing that muscle, whether  it's near your home, your neighborhood or your city or town.
