the project

The Town of West Hartford Department of Leisure Services has a vision to plant ten native plant and pollinator gardens in ten parks across Town in the year 2020. As a part of our Ten Minute Walk campaign, tying all West Hartford citizens to a park or nature area within ten minutes of their residence, this initiative will bring natural habitats to neighborhoods all over the Town of West Hartford.

As native plant and pollinator gardens take off, residents of all ages will have the opportunity to enjoy exploring a natural habitat close to their homes. These gardens will provide a place for people to rest, enjoy the beauty of nature, and learn about local habitats.  Included with each garden will be educational signage helping interprete the garden landscape for the public to enjoy.

the steps

As a long-term garden project, this will be a multi-year endeavor, as we establish perennial beds with vibrant vegetation. To begin in the year 2020, we will conduct the following steps:

  1. Research and purchase a variety of native plant species, specific to the soil and sunlight needs of each location
  2. Prep garden beds with topsoil and mulch
  3. Design and print educational signage
  4. Plant gardens as designated by seedling requirments and seasonal changes
  5. Monitor, weed, and upkeep gardens throughout the summer
  6. Winterize gardens for re-growth next spring

why we're doing it

Westmoor Park and the Leisure Services department of West Hartford are committed to environmental sustainability, natural preservation, and providing equal access to nature for all citizens.  We know that access to nature improves the lives our neighbors, and increases awareness of the environment around us.

By creating new native plant and pollinator gardens in parks all over West Hartford, we are developing a walk-able nature corridor where people from all over can enjoy a natural environment, as well as learn about the importance of plant preservation and pollinators.  These gardens will be a mix of annuals and perennials that will bloom all season, bringing beauty to our parks.  With the addition of interpretive signage in each garden, we will be able to advance the mission of engaging the entire community of West Hartford in meaningful, long-lasting environmental education.

These pockets of nature and beauty will be long-lasting oases for the neighborhoods around each of the ten parks.  By spreading the gardens around the Town, we know we will reach people from all social strata, and enable nature experiences for everyone.
