2022 NYC Clean Bay: Arthur Kill, Raritan, Sandy Hook, Lower Bay

Projects may occur on NYC land or NJ land.

Check out our Guide to Green Infrastructure for some ideas!

Eligibility Requirements:

1. Projects must provide a public benefit and can be installed on either New York or New Jersey land. Public benefit means that projects must be installed on:            a. Public land; OR            b. Multiple private properties, (which qualifies it as having a public benefit); OR           c. One private property AND have a 501c3 fiscal sponsor. Please note projects on a single private property are not eligible to be fiscally sponsored by ioby. 2. Project leaders must describe how their project will aim to generally improve water quality in the Arthur Kill, Kill van Kull, Raritan Bay, Lower Bay, or Sandy Hook Bay. Measurable data is not required or expected, just a description of how the project will seek to improve water quality in some way.3. Projects must be specific and concrete. All ioby campaigns must include a budget outlining how funds will be spent.4. Be led by an individual resident, informal group, nonprofit organization, place of worship, school, or business association. You do not need to be a 501c3 nonprofit to participate. ioby can provide fiscal sponsorship or we can help you find a local fiscal sponsor.5. Finish crowdfunding and cash-out by November 30, 2023 at the latest. Here's why
  • ioby policy requires that match participants achieve a minimum of five distinct donors in order to cash out with matching funds.
6. Projects must be installed or implemented by December 31, 2023 at the latest.7. Projects must complete a required report by December 31st with pictures, receipts, and a description of the final installation.  8. The following project types are the primary goals of this program and will be more easily approved, but we encourage you to submit your unique project idea for review. We'll discuss your project's water quality impact.            a: Stormwater reduction, only in the MS4 drainage areas, blue on this map.                       For example: rain barrels, rain gardens, tree plantings.               b: Stormwater pollution remediation.                       For example: riparian restoration plantings to filter stormwater as it enters the bay.            c: Ecosystem restoration:                       For example: planting oyster beds, or otherwise remediating water pollution.

Ineligible Projects and Budgets:

1. Education programs; this ioby match program is only for direct water quality improvement projects, not education about water quality.2. Projects may not provide a private benefit to an individual person, property, business, or family.3. Projects led by an outside organization that aim to ‘serve’ a community, but do not deeply involve or engage residents of that community.4. Fundraising for a pool of funds to be re-granted to others or used for an unspecified purpose in the future.5. Political activities or policy education. Projects must comply with 501c3 limitations.
