summary

Tent for PS 11's Farm Market - which is student-run and sells local, organic produce from a NYS Farm.

the problem

Making local, organic produce available, accessible and affordable to the PS 11 community, many of whom live in public housing, and educating our community about the importance of supporting local farms.

the solution

PS 11 Programs has purchased shares in the Chelsea CSA. As members, we receive produce weekly from Stoneledge Farm, an organic farm in upstate NY. Third grade students learn about local, organic and seasonal produce, how it can be prepared, what it tastes like. They operate the market from June through November, selling the produce to the community at or below market prices. Teaching children and their families about healthy foods and the importance and impact to our environment of supporting local farms are the key components of our project.

the steps

This is the second season that we have run the market, and we intend to continue our membership in the CSA and operate the market next year as well. However, to protect the produce and the children from the elements (sun in the summer and rain all year), we need to purchase a tent which costs $350.00.
