summary

Raise environmental consciousness using art and creative campaigns through the implementation of street tree signs and tree guards.

the problem

We aim to heighten environmental consciousness. Our mission is to reconnect citizen's to the natural world by calling their attention to it. It's time each of us steps up in our inherent role as the Earth's steward. The problem these days is that we are all bombarded with so many devastating causes, so many emails, and so many pleas for help. It becomes overwhelming to digest and follow through with many of the things we want to care about. Root For Trees Street Tree Signage Campaign is a way to elevate our collective environmental consciousness without demanding much of anyone. Rather then attempting to be yet another cause demanding attention, our project is meant to serve as a revival of our environmental appreciation so as to inspire people to make conscious choices in the future.

the solution

INSPIRE THE PEOPLE! We believe in the power of environmental enthusiasm over environmental statistics. We propose the implementation of citywide street tree signs. The mission is to turn the city into a mini tree museum. Imagine that each tree you passed by taught you something new, made you think twice, or infused you with appreciation for the natural world. Trees are alive, just like us. Our goal is to make that connection and give NYC citizens an opportunity to learn from another majestic creature.

the steps

From now through February we will be retaining and scanning artwork from the artists, finding a local carpenter capable of manufacturing our tree guards, and continuing to create neighborhood alliances and raise funds. February through April will be full production time. Our signs will be produced at an eco-friendly manufacturer in Richmond, VA., and our guards will be produced locally. The project will launch within May 2010.

Description of tree guards and signage

Tree guards are the protective guards or short level gates that surround a street tree in order to protect it from peeing dogs (their urine is lethal to the soils nutrients), trampling passerbys (the more ppl walk in the tree pits, the more compacted their soil gets. when soil is compacted water cant get through to the roots), and from litter. The more protected a tree pit is, the more likely people are to watch out for it and treat the area respectively.

Signage for the trees is basically tree I.D... labeling each tree with its common and scientific name so that people in nyc can start to become familiar with the trees that line our cities streets.

don't understand

Sounds like a great idea, but, uh.... what are (is?) street tree signage and guards? Maybe it would be helpful if you explained or otherwise made it obvious what that is. Maybe it's something indigenous to NYC, not being from there I don't know... Thanks.

Four New Projects!

The Queens Coalition for Parks and Green Spaces' 3rd Annual Going Green in Queens event in Spring 2010 http://ioby.org/projects/queens/going-green-queens-2010 designed to bring together people to learn about environment issues and how they can be solved. Donate to support the educational event as they strive to reduce their own waste stream.

A science teacher at PS/MS 15 the Institute for Environmental Learning in the Bronx has a project to bring compost bins to the school. http://ioby.org/projects/bronx/kids-compost Only $337 will help them turn school lunch waste into soil they can use. With compost bins and supplies, they will reduce their environmental impact and teach students about soil science.
