summary

We need help working on winter repairs and programs on indoor composting with red wiggler worms.

the problem

Currently, New York City waste is trucked around the city and exported for landfill or incineration in New Jersey, Virginia, Pennsylvania and so on. The impacts of dealing with garbage this way are felt in communities who live all along these truck routes, transfer stations and disposal sites. Public money is thrown away on polluting the air and wearing down the roads to export thousands of tons of compostable material each day in New York City. We think waste export is itself a waste! Our compost project creates a very valuable product, and spares all these negative impacts!

the solution

Composting is an important alternative to garbage export! Our project provides a place for people to drop off their compostable waste (food, paper, plant debris, etc) locally and divert a large portion of their household waste from export. Plus, we make ""black gold""!

the steps

The North Brooklyn Compost Project is a volunteer-run compost pile in McCarren Park that helps its 300+ members reduce waste and improve soil. NBCP seeks funding for winter repairs to their site's fence (good fences make good neighbors!) as well as materials to run winter programs on indoor composting with red wiggler worms. Your $50 donation would provide one North Brooklyn household with enough training and worms to go off grid with their kitchen waste this winter!

Project Updates

Five New Projects from Brooklyn, Manhattan & Queens need your help!

Added Value, the Red Hook farming group whose name has become nearly synonymous with "sweat equity" has increased their productive land to include a 3-acre stretch on Governor's Island. They need to purchase a rototiller to cultivate its farm there, which will bring increased production, youth employment and educational activities. Help them out.

PS 11's student-run Farm Market sells local, organic produce from a New York State Farm CSA to the neighborhood surrounding the school. They need your help to buy a tent.
