South Beach Neighborfest

Celebrating the local South Beach Community while activating and improving Washington Plaza.

Leader

SoBe Neighborfest

Location

3rd and Washington Miami Beach, FL 33139

About the project

South Beach is one of the most unique places in America - offering some of the densest, most walkable neighborhoods and having a 30% non-motorist transportation uses. Yet most of the focus goes to the tourist sector with large, pricey events. Only 10% of the population turns out to vote for local elections. Though highly diverse, few neighbors kow each other. Neighborfest will be a resident oriented block party, helping the community of residents in South Beach come together.

This event will occur in Washington Plaza, a great shared space at the intersection of Washington Ave, 3rd and Euclid Streets. While built as a plaza, it has not ever been detailed or activated as such. Through this event we will work to properly define this civic space and fill it with community members.

The Steps

  • Work with the design professionals to create plan for plaza
  • work with city of Miami Beach to approve - and hopefully assist with - plaza improvements
  • file for temporary street closure permit and event permit
  • recruit local food vendors
  • recruit musicians
  • recruit local entertainment and education activities
  • Aquire planters, benches, plants, and any other necessary elements
  • Hold a community build day
  • rent/build temporary components of festival
  • Throw neighborfest and have a good time!

Why we‘re doing it

Washington Plaza is an underutilized civic resource and park in an area where cars rule. We want to activate it as a community asset and leverage it to build a stronger community in South Beach.
