About the project

LiHa Community Press (LiHa CP) will address a lack of a accessible and affordable print studio services where groups, entrepreneurs and creatives can work on their materials in a welcoming comfortable space. Additionally, Education is a central theme of LiHa Community Press, providing courses on graphic design process, software, equipment use and arts.LiHa CP will provide access to specialty equipment including papermaking, silk screen printing, laminating, sticker printing, and volume cutters in addition to standard and large format printing. All materials will be non-toxic, environmentally friendly and recycled/recyclable.

LiHa Community Press  will be an affordable, accessible, professional quality print studio centered around a community of creatives, entrepreneurs and citizens groups. LiHa CP’s goal is to support and expand this community through social and collaborative activities and education.

The Steps

  • Purchase a wide range of equipment;

  • Configure and connect the equipment;

  • Program and offer ongoing classes and training in desktop publishing, image editing, prepress and printing;

  • Operate as a publicly accessible print shop on a simple fee for service basis

  • Provide at - or below - cost printing services for community bettering efforts

Why we‘re doing it

LiHa Community Press will be able to offer design services, classes and equipment access to the community, becoming a creative center.  As a creative center, LiHa CP will build community by fostering local talent and providing social space and activities. Current access to print equipment comes with a high price tag, excessive lead time, and without a creative community or knowledgeable assistance. Nor is it concerned with the materials it uses. LiHa CP will encourage community and collaboration, and keep costs low for both beginners and creative professionals utilizing the shared resource studio.

The papermaking courses, specifically, will target the issues surrounding traditional wood pulp paper and explore alternatives - especially those utilizing other waste streams; laundry, food production, etc.
