About the project
Libraries have long been revered as temples of learning not simply because of the books they contain, but because of the way that those books are organized and highlighted. Public Libraries are following the needs of their patrons - providing access to many resources - at the cost of a robust and dynamic collection of books organized according to the Dewey Decimal system. Access to specialized collections are limited to university libraries, a resource not easily accessible. While the digital age may bring vast quantities of information to our fingertips, it does so without context.
The experience of riffling through a book and browsing through the shelves of books adjacent to your selection is a key component of learning how to learn, engaging and following productive interests, and retaining that knowledge. The reading, writing and binding of literature is fundamental to a fully rounded education.
Bookworm Literature Studio aims to renew the didactic experience of a book-stuffed library, and to expand it back out into the community with the use of innovative technology and guerilla librarian tactics. This project will be comprised of a network of semi-publicly housed book collections and the software to manage them; medieval to modern book-binding equipment for on-demand out of print books, book restoration, and local independent publishing; stocking and maintaining free pop up book exchanges at local cafes, restaurant, clinics, parks and other locations; educational events, programming and more.

Why we‘re doing it
Public libraries are pulled in many directions by the needs of their patrons, and the richness of physical books and browsing shelves in a self directed manner is being lost. Additionally, reading as a core component of regular life is dissapearing. This project aims to rebuild community around the shared joy of literature.
