Volunteers Wanted: It's My Park! Day, Saturday, May 16
This Saturday, May 16 is It's My Park! Day. Get outside and get in your park!
On ioby.org donors have already funded one It's My Park! Day project -- removing debris and planting flowers at the Veteran's Square and Vietnam Memorial on Sunrise Highway in Rosedale, Queens. Another -- It's My Park! Day at Sara D. Roosevelt Park on the Lower East Side/Chinatown -- needs to raise $345 for plants to plant around the park that day. Support this project with your donation by clicking here.
For those of you looking for ideas on how to spend your Saturday, check your neighborhood park and get outside! You can learn tree care techniques in Sara D. Roosevelt Park, contact Dylan House at Hester Street Collaborative for more info. You can plant trees at Randall's Island from 10am-2:30pm, contact Anandi at info@earthdayny.org for more information. You can clean up trash and plant flowers at the Veteran's Memorial in Queens with the Cornucopia Society and the Queens Coalition for Parks and Green Spaces at Sunrise Highway, Francis Lewis Blvd and 246 street.
For more It's My Park! Day activities check out the Partnership for Parks website. I know there are also great activities at Travers Park in Queens and Brook Park in the South Bronx. If these are in your neighborhood, please contact Friends of Travers Park and Friends of Brook Park for details. If anyone else has It's My Park! Day info, leave a comment here.

As part of Randall’s Island Sports Foundation master plan, 65 ball fields and soccer fields are in the process of being built. As a result, many trees have been removed in order to make way for the fields. We are now planting thousands of new trees on the island to create recreation areas. Volunteers will plant 10 ft. trees along the waterfront site. Volunteers will be instructed in how to measure the depth of the hole, add compost to hole and make a “well” around the base of the tree, once it is planted.
