The heritage gardens of Washington Park in Park Slope, Brooklyn are kept by The Old Stone House and the adjacent M.S. 51 community. The partnership gardens refer to the Dutch colonial period and the landscape of Revolutionary era America. These outdoor classrooms include bird and butterfly habitat, food crops, berries, and culinary and medicinal herbs; both native and introduced. The leaf and pumpkin reclaiming project - THE COMPOST-O-RAMA - will be an annual event to introduce natural economy on our site. The goal is to build several jumbo sized compost receptacles. By keeping the leaves and using them to make compost on site, we will save a sizable amount of fossil fuel, potential pollution, noise, traffic and money. Plus we get healthy, fertile soil and a compost model for educating students and neighbors . The compost bins are designed by Open Road NY, a youth employment and education program.
